MTHS SkillsUSA Info...

To get an idea of what SkillsUSA is all about, check out skillsusaillinois.org and/or skillsusa.org.

Who... Any MTHS Sophomore, Junior or Senior that is academically eligible may join. Usually students signing up have experience in a vocational-technical, computer, business, or home-economics class although those are not prerequisites.

What... SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry representatives, working together to ensure America has a skilled work force. It helps each student excel.

SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization serving teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations. It was formerly known as VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America).

Membership: More than 300,000 students and instructors join SkillsUSA annually, organized into more than 17,000 sections and 54 state and territorial associations. SkillsUSA has served more than 9.9 million members since its founding.

Mission: SkillsUSA is an applied method of instruction for preparing America’s high performance workers enrolled in public career and technical programs. It provides quality education experiences for students in leadership, teamwork, citizenship and character development. It builds and reinforces self-confidence, work attitudes and communications skills. It emphasizes total quality at work—high ethical standards, superior work skills, life-long education, and pride in the dignity of work. SkillsUSA also promotes understanding of the free-enterprise system and involvement in community service.

At MTHS, our SkillsUSA group will compete in a written test at Illinois Central College in areas of student choosing. If students qualify for the state competition, they will compete in Springfield in those same areas.

When and Where... Sign ups begin in November with a deadline in January by seeing Mr. Stoecker or Mrs. Dale.
Written Exams are held at MTHS in February. Qualifying students then attend the hands-on competition in Springfield in April. First place winners get to compete in Kentucky in June. (Yes, we’ve had
students qualify for nationals in the past - even a national champion in 2009! - We had two state champions in 2011 and two more in 2014.)

Why Join... Display your skills, compare your skills with others, looks great on a resume and/or college application, make new friends, it’s fun, etc., etc.

See Mr. Stoecker or Mrs. Dale or the web sites listed above for answers to any questions you have.
